As we are moving quickly through July for most families the start of the school year will be here before you know it! For many families, handwriting is the number one concern going into the school year. Having your child best prepared to complete all of the writing tasks necessary to keep up in the classroom is extremely important. What many people do not realize is there are multiple parts of handwriting besides putting a pencil to paper and writing letters. Today we will explore some of the areas that contribute to handwriting. These skills include but are not limited to the following-
Core Strength
Scapular Strength and Stability
Shoulder Stability
Elbow Stability
Wrist Strength and Stability
Intrinsic Hand Strength
Bilateral Coordination/Crossing Midline
Fine Motor Coordination
Visual Perception/Visual Motor Coordination
Motor Planning
Executive Function
Over the next few weeks we will be exploring each area and give you and your family some warning signs and some home activities to help your child. If you have multiple areas of concern please feel free to contact us for recommendations or to discuss an evaluation to asses the areas of concerns.
